First Monday Trade days

Today we went to Canton, TX about 25 miles south of us to the monthly "First Monday Trade Days". This has been going on in this town since the late 1800's. The circuit court convened every first Monday, so people from all around came to town to buy, sell, and trade. There is one main venue that has almost 28 miles of walking in streets and through many buildings. We didn't walk that much. The vendors are open at 9:00 AM Thursday thru Monday and sell every kind of stuff. We didn't buy much, but we had a good time.

On the way home, we picked up Charley at the groomers in Wills Point and headed over to Lake Tawakani State park for a look. What a super park to camp in. There are seventy-eight sites, some long pull-thru's. Many have 50 Amp and sewer connections. Nightly rates are $24 for 50A/W/S. I don't know about the 4th of July weekend, but the park was not crowded today.

Lake Tawakani Preserve

We are in week 2 of our stay here. Temps have been above 100 for the last several days and for the next week or so. We are in a shaded site and using 1 AC on 30A keeps us cool. We switch to the rear AC at nite and no problems keeping comfortable.

We finished the first draft of our new book!! We sent the manuscript out to three different proofreaders and when we do the final edit, we will submit it to Kindle Direct Publishing. We hope to have it available in August sometime. We hope to have a print version out in Oct.

We visit the Audie Murphy Museum

We drove up to Greenville, TX this morning to see the Audie Murphy Museum. Part of the museum is dedicated to the local cotton industry that flourished here for a hundred years.

This large bronze ststue was done by a local artist and depicts Audie Murphy in a scene from where he won one of the  his many medals.

The local cotton industry is also showcased in this museum.

These are the many medals won by the most decorated soldier of WWII. Missing for some reason is the Medal of Honor, but the ribbon is at the top of the ribbons.

He wasn't a big guy, just 5'5" and 110 lbs or so. lousy lighting in the museum for photography.

In 2 1/2 years, he went from PFC to 1st LT as he fought in numerous campaigns in several theaters of the war.

We had a good time here and spent more than 2 hours observing all the various exhibits. We highly recommend it if you are in this part of Texas just east of Dallas. The cost is $6 and $4 for vets and seniors.

Onward to Lake Tawakani Thousand Trails Park

Today we move about two hundred and fifty miles from Lake Conroe near Houston to Lake Tawakani east of Dallas. Gas is getting lower and lower. Today we paid $3.39/gal for diesel. We did the math and in the last 301 miles we used 29.6 gallons of fuel. I'll take 10mpg plus any time! We will be here a few weeks and we will finish the first draft of our book and send it off to be proofread. Then after July 4th we will head east to Heber Springs, AK to meet with the folks at Workamper News. Then we move to Lynchburg, VA near the blue ridge mountains. From there we go to PA to see our grandkids. Eventually we will winter in FL. I'll put up some pictures tomorrow.
